Tooth Replacement Options: Implant Supported Dentures

implant supported dentures Phoenix, AZ

Implant supported dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth. They are best suited for those who have lost most of their real teeth. Implants are metal rods that are placed in a person's jaw. They replace the teeth roots that fall out when teeth are lost, and keep the jawbone stimulated.

An implant with a crown attached to it is the closest thing to a real tooth, but it also happens to be the most expensive way to go. The cost of a single implant can be more than the cost of an entire set of dentures. Due to this, replacing an entire set of teeth with implants is not an option for most people.

How implant supported dentures work

Implant supported dentures combine two of the most popular oral prosthetics used in dentistry to provide patients with an economical way to replace their lost teeth. They do not come with the many drawbacks people who use traditional dentures complain about like:

  • The appliance frequently shifting when worn
  • The rigid framework of traditional dentures rubbing against their cheeks and creating sores
  • Having to use awful tasting dental adhesives
  • Difficulty chewing and speaking
  • Always having to worry about their dentures falling out
  • Having to spend 20 minutes cleaning their oral prosthetic each night

Implant supported dentures can be removable or permanently fixed in place. A large number of patients prefer permanently fixed ones since these do not require specialized cleaning, just brushing and flossing.

The process

Getting implant supported dentures starts with a consultation with a dentist. The patient is evaluated to ensure they have the bone tissue thickness needed to hold implants in place. The dentist also goes over their medical history to check if they have health issues like immune disorders that can slow down their ability to heal.

The dentist will also talk to the patient about habits like smoking and drinking since they can also hinder recovery.

On the day of the surgery, the dentist will insert four to six implants on one or both halves of the patient's jaw. These implants then get to fuse with bone tissues surrounding them in a process called osseointegration. Temporary dentures might be attached to the implants during this period. Once the implants are fused in place, the dentist will attach a set of customized dentures to them.

The advantages of getting implant supported dentures over conventional ones include:

  • The appliance looks and feels natural in the wearer's mouth
  • It helps to prevent the bone tissue loss that occurs when a person loses some of their teeth
  • Chewing and speaking feels natural with implant supported dentures
  • Permanently fixed implant supported dentures do not require specialized cleaning
  • The patient gets to enjoy all of their favorite foods
  • There is no adjustment period unlike traditional dentures, which can take weeks to get used to
